Hauschka and Crystal Beth
On this night I went with friends to the small hall at Benaroya to hear Hauschka. The opening act was Crystal Beth (the musician, not a NYC comedian), who started with soothing clarinet but soon added loop pedal and effects and vocals (singing, beatboxing, throat singing...), layer upon layer of herself making sound. One of her songs reached a sort of hissing apcopalypse before returning to calm. I don't know if it's music I can say I liked but it was absorbing to witness. As for Hauschka, the prepared-piano performer, I was less engaged. He uses a lot of electronics besides items inside the piano, but it was often used all at once, and the music-making itself was a lot of mushy repetitive phase-shifting to my ears, though there were some moments.
