Tonight I went with my son to hear the Seattle Symphony play Shostakovich and Prokofiev, conducted by Pablo Rus Broseta. The program:

• Shostakovich: Festive Overture

  A fizzy, witty light piece that I don't remember now.

• Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 3 (Beatrice Rana, piano)

  This concerto has become quite a warhorse. Recordings tend to focus on the piano front-and-center, but up close I was able to hear more of the colorful detail in the orchestration. Beatrice Rana played her part to the balconies. She's just 24 but plays with a powerful confidence. Her encore: the ending Tocatta from "Pour le piano" by Claude Debussy.

• Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10

  This is one of Shostakovich's best creations, though stubbornly not among my very favorites. This performance didn't dig as deep into its darkness as I've heard elsewhere, though of course it did get loud, but did bring out its fun and color, which in the context of the other pieces on the program made a lot of sense.
