20th Century Women
On this night I watched 20th Century Women on bluray. I liked this movie and it stayed in my thoughts afterward. It's rare that a movie observes people's mixed-up feelings about each other in the way this one does. Any other movie like this might have veered into sentimentality or 1970's nostalgia, but nothing about the setting actually felt old or sweetened. It shows the kinds of things that actually happen between people, where they can't figure out how others feel and have to paw their way around, and can't make complete sense of their own feelings in the first place, and can't say things out loud. It was interesting to me that the theme of feminism running through the story was played against those emotional mismatches instead being only about power struggle. The teenage boy in particular sets out intentionally to be enlightened, but then he still doesn't see the love that's right in front of his face. There were a couple scenes that didn't ring true for me, but overall this is a good movie.
