Danish String Quartet

Meany Center's chamber music series features a LOT of string quartets, but since there is so much great music for the form it doesn't really get old, especially not with the Danish String Quartet playing. When I saw them here before they were amazing, and so was tonight's performance: Bartok's quartet No. 1, a Nordic folk selection arranged by the musicians, and Beethoven's first Razumovsky quartet Op. 59 No.1. Though I love so much of Bartok's music, I had always felt vaquely annoyed by his first quartet, but this performance made me like it a lot, and I wasn't the only one: I heard people afterward saying they especially liked the Bartok — not something you hear very often. They brought out its color and character, shaping it rather than needling it. After that their folk song arrangements were wonderful, and the Beethoven was truly stellar.
