Takács String Quartet: Mozart, Vine, Mendelssohn

This was the legendary Takács String Quartet, so I wasn't going to miss it (even though elsewhere in Seattle somebody was performing Busoni).

The program:

  1. Mozart: String Quartet in D Major, K. 575
I'm not deeply familiar with Mozart's quartets, I have to admit (I've spent much time with Haydn and Beethoven and later composers), so this was revelatory for me: genial, but then deeply crafted — just like Mozart.
  2. Carl Vine: String Quartet No. 6, "Child's Play"
This was a new work, and while it made use of many sort-of-modern techniques and had beautiful moments I did not find it especially compelling in itself, let alone pathbreaking.
  3. Mendelssohn: String Quintet No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 87, with guest violist Erika Eckert
Here again was craft and fun, and while I didn't find it especially memorable I was glad to hear it live.
