Third Coast Percussion: Paddle To The Sea

The percussion quartet Third Coast Percussion came to Meany for something rather off-the-wall: a live score to the movie "Paddle To The Sea" from 1966, which was made by the National Film Board of Canada based on a the 1941 children's book "Paddle-to-the-Sea". Third Coast Percussion split the film up into chapters broken up by instrumental interludes with black-and-white projections abstracted from the film as a backdrop, considerably lengthening the running time and giving the audience a chance to focus on the musicians. Of course the original soundtrack to the film was removed, or mostly (there were wave sounds at times). It was all imaginitively done, and it was fun to hear the kids in the audience reacting. You can find Paddle To The Sea on YouTube (but with its original soundtrack of course). Third Coast Percussion will soon be releasing an album with the music from this program.
